Poutine Trending on Recent OpenTable Restaurant Reviews: Poutine

There are entire blogs devoted solely to the pursuit of the best poutine and, I assume, living with heart disease.

Got a craving for poutine? Blame Canada! The Great White North birthed this dish in way back in the Mad Men era. Made with a base of French fries, fresh cheese curds, and brown gravy, poutine has been getting upscale makeovers from ambitious chefs, through the addition of luxury ingredients, such as duck, lobster, and truffles, and technical twists, to elevate its stance from a national fast-food fave to an international treasure. See what OpenTable diners have been saying about poutine in reviews from the last seven days.

The Ballroom, Toronto, Ontario: ”My sister and other frind tried the mushroom poutine, and said it was good also.”

Bannock, Toronto, Ontario: ”From the herb laden poutine, the bannock sandwich, to the incredible butter tart, we devoured it.”

Boneta Restaurant, Vancouver, British Columbia: ”Super poutine! Crisp fries, light, tasty gravy, fresh curds.”

Brava Bistro, Calgary, Alberta: ”The lobster poutine was delicious as was my shrimp and avocado salad.”

East Ender, Portland, Maine: ”The food was excellent. Lobster poutine is evil (in a good way).”

Fork, Chicago, Illinois: “The poutine was fab!”

Foundry on Elm, Somerville, Massachusetts: ”We had the poutine, which was rich but very tasty.”

Garde Manger, Montreal, Quebec: ”The food is indeed amazing. The foie gras and lobster poutine didn’t disappoint.”

The Gorbals, Los Angeles, California: ”We had grilled lettuce, beet barley risotto, grilled squid, bacon wrapped matzoh balls, and Bánh mì poutine. Grilled lettuce and Bánh mì poutine were really great and tasty.”

Dining Poll: How Often Do You Buy a Bottle of Wine at a Restaurant?

Monday, March 12th, 2012

When I was a kid, my parents rarely ordered a bottle of wine when we dined out at a restaurant. Maybe that was because there were only two adults to drink a bottle — not that that’s ever stopped me. I think, really, though it was that ordering a whole bottle of wine, at the time, was something reserved for special occasions or celebrities (If they saw a favorite actor at a restaurant, instead of asking for an autograph, they would send over a bottle of wine, which I think is really charming). Now, ordering a bottle of wine — or two — has become, for many people, an integral part of the dining experience. Let us know what your habits are in today’s poll!

RN74 Seattle Last Bottle Board Top 50 Wine Lists in the U.S.: Congratulations, Diners Choice Award Winners!

RN74 Seattle's Last Bottle Board helps alert diners to wines that are about to be sold out.

OpenTable is pleased to announce the winners of the 2011 Diners’ Choice Awards for the top 50 restaurants with notable wine lists. Derived from more than 10 million reviews submitted by OpenTable diners for more than 12,000 restaurants in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, the list of honorees is a terrific guide for oenophiles.

This geographically diverse list of winners, which includes Aureole in Las Vegas, Frasca Food and Wine in Boulder, RN74 in Seattle, and Veritas in New York, highlights 50 restaurants in 21 different states. California, arguably home to the nation’s best wine producers, boasts an impressive 11 award-winning restaurants. New York, Maryland and Virginia establishments took four spots apiece, while North Carolina and Washington boasted three each. Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Michigan and Nevada are home to two honorees each, while additional states to earn a place on the list include Connecticut, Kansas, Ohio, Oregon, Texas and Wisconsin, among others.

“The entire team at RN74 is very grateful to be honored for our wine list. We strive to offer not only the best of Burgundy, but the best our local wineries have to offer, and we’re very proud of both. We are working diligently to introduce our guests to new and exciting wines, and we plan to grow our list by double this coming year,” said Eric Perlin, the general manager at award-winning restaurant RN74 Seattle.

Congratulations to all the winners. Diners, what restaurant boasts your favorite wine list? Weigh in here or on Facebook!

80 sips Presenting the 80 Sips Challenge by Bottlenotes: Prix Fixe Wining + Dining in NYC

Cheers to the Bottlenotes.com 80 Sips Challenge in the Big Apple!

Eric Arnold, editor of The Daily Sip, a free, wine-centric e-newsletter from the folks at Bottlenotes.com, is guest-blogging about the Bottlenotes.com 80 Sips Challenge.

Restaurant Week is always a welcome time in New York dining: It’s a stretch during which just about anyone can get a taste of the sometimes-otherwise unaffordable. But what’s usually missing from the three-course lunches and dinners is an appreciation for wine pairing.

That changes starting Monday with the 80 Sips Challenge by Bottlenotes.com. For the next two weeks, several great NYC restaurants are offering pre-fixe lunches ($25ish) and dinners ($35ish) paired with wines from Brancott Estate in New Zealand, Conway Family Wines in California, and several red and white selections from France’s Roussillon region. The wine pairings cost extra, but these are all very wallet-friendly, high-quality wines that you’ll be able to find in your local wine shop, later on. And beyond enjoying the good food and wine, there’s some added incentive for dining out over the next couple weeks:

Top Chef D.C. Episode 3: Waxman On, Waxman Off

TCDC3 Green Herb Top Chef D.C. Episode 3: Waxman On, Waxman Off

"What is the green herb?"

The cheftestants return in week 3 of Top Chef D.C. — and so does Chef Ed, who is watching along. Ed Hardy, as you’ll recall, is an aspiring cheftestant. Eater interviewed him as he auditioned for this past season and he even has a “Why Isn’t Ed Hardy on Top Chef?” Facebook fan group. The previews for this episode indicated that the contestants would be cooking for a group of Capitol Hill interns, and it turns out that’s a job Ed had before the call of the kitchen lured him away from politics. Ed comments, “I promised I wouldn’t do this but I have to: Bravo, what were you thinking? You passed up a thousand chances to make me look like an arrogant ass on cable TV. Instead of Arnold’s line about his sister, you could have had Ed saying ‘Cook for Capitol Hill interns? Hell, I was an intern.’ Speaking of interns, have you seen a more sorry bunch of folks that should be among the brightest and the best? These are our future leaders of America? They could hardly manage more than a few syllables: ‘Mmm, tast-tee.’” Okay, Ed’s getting ahead of himself. Focus!

The show opens with sleepy cheftestants bemoaning Jacqueline’s exit. Amanda battles survivor guilt while Kenny gets a note of encouragement from his girlfriend. Meanwhile, Angelo vants to be alone. He sits outside talking about how he doesn’t like to be on the bottom and that he’s mad at Kenny for not standing behind his teammates. This makes him want to isolate himself from everybody. Is that a threat or a promise?
