Unicef Tap Project 2012 Support the UNICEF Tap Project: Dine Out on March 19 thru March 25

Your donation of $1 will provide clean drinking water to a child for 40 days!

UNICEF invites you to take a stand by taking a seat during the UNICEF Tap Project! When you dine out at a participating restaurant between March 19-25, you’ll be invited to donate a minimum of $1 for the tap water you would normally be served for free. For every dollar raised, a child will have clean water for 40 days.

Clean water is essential, yet nearly 900 million people worldwide lack access to it—and nearly half of those people are children. In alignment with the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, UNICEF is working with its partners to reduce the number of people without access to safe water and basic sanitation by 50% by 2015, which will also save children at risk from waterborne illnesses, the second highest cause of preventable childhood deaths. Every day, 4,000 children die from waterborne illnesses, and UNICEF is committed to doing whatever it takes to make that number zero.

Since its inception in 2007, the UNICEF Tap Project has raised nearly $3 million in the U.S. and has helped provide clean water for millions of children globally. In its sixth year, the UNICEF Tap Project has become a dynamic movement that affords everyone the opportunity to help provide the world’s children with safe, clean water. The 2012 UNICEF Tap Project Funds will specifically target Togo, Vietnam, Mauritania, and Cameroon.

We’ve rounded up participating restaurants in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin. Make a restaurant reservation now and donate $1 to do your part to support the UNICEF Tap Project!

D.C.'s most acclaimed chefs will be cooking for you at the St. Jude Gourmet Gala on February 21!

We’re pleased to support the 14th annual St. Jude Gourmet Gala: Mardi Gras for the Kids! on Tuesday, February 21, 2012. Not your father’s stale fundraiser dinner, the St. Jude Gourmet Gala is a must-attend event for foodies. Guests will dine on savory and sweet dishes from the top 40 chefs in the D.C. metro area and sip creative and cutting-edge cocktails from high-profile mixologists in the capital area.

Now in its fourteenth year, the St. Jude Gourmet Gala has become a veritable who’s who in the D.C. food scene. Up from 20 chefs when it was first held, this year’s gala counts 40 participating chefs, including Michel Richard from Citronelle, to Nora Pouillon from Restaurant Nora, to Eric Ziebold from CityZenScott Drewno from The Source, and Geoff Tracy of Chef Geoff’s Downtown.

In addition to serving diners, all the chefs are in contention for the competitive ‘Tasters’ Choice’ award. Chef Geoff says, “It’s an honor to share our talents at an event that will help St. Jude find answers to save the lives of countless children. On a lighter note, the gala presents the perfect setting for collaboration among some of the industry’s best and a friendly competition to produce the perfect dish.”

The timing of the event is very special this year, as this year marks the 50th anniversary for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and today the U.S. Post Office has released a commemorative stamp in honor of founder Danny Thomas’s 100 birthday.

Purchase your tickets now to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and to enjoy an evening of culinary excellence from Washington, D.C.’s top chefs!

A Look at Michael Mina’s 20th Anniversary Tribute Dinner for All Stars Helping Kids

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

On Sunday, October 9, 2011, culinary superstars joined with sports superstars to celebrate the first 20 years of Chef Michael Mina‘s career at MICHAEL MINA restaurant. Proceeds from the event went to benefit All Stars Helping Kids. NFL All Star Ronnie Lott and baseball legend Reggie Jackson were on hand to fete Chef Mina. A carefully curated multi-course, twelve-dish menu (plus canapes!) featured dishes from chefs including Omri Aflalo (Bourbon Steak SF), Jason Berthold (RN74), Mike Davis (MICHAEL MINA), Gerard Hayden (The North Fork Table & Inn), Chris L’Hommedieu (MICHAEL MINA), Joseph Humphrey (Dixie), Paul Piscopo (Trace), George Morrone (Boca Steak), Bruce Hill (BIX), Traci Des Jardins (Jardiniere), Ron Siegel (The Dining Room at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel), Melissa Perello (Frances), Bill Corbett (Absinthe Brasserie), and Lincoln Carson (MICHAEL MINA), as well as Chef Mina himself!

OpenTable, a sponsor of the celebration, hosted some very special guests at our table. Giveaway winners Judy Erlich and Bob Katz, David Honig and Hannah Blumenstiel, who have dined with Chef Mina more than 50 times (!), and Kelly Yu, perhaps OpenTable’s most valuable Bay area diner with almost 500 reservations, and guest Josh Gold, dined with us as we made our way through the many courses that included caviar, abalone, foie gras, scallops, quail, and lamb!

As we look forward to the next 20 years of Chef Mina’s amazing career, you can look back at the event in our Flickr slideshow.

OpenTable Bakes to Support Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign!

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

As you know, we’re big supporters of Share Our Strength and Dine Out for No Kid Hungry, which runs through September 24, 2011. To take our commitment a step further, OpenTable held our first annual in-house bake sale! Our participation in the Great American Bake Sale was a complete success, with employees baking and buying to raise nearly $1,200! Every cent will go directly to Share Our Strength’s efforts to stamp out childhood hunger.

There were treats both sweet (cupcakes!) and savory (soft pretzels!), and, by the time the day was over, only crumbs remained.

Peep some pictures of our baked goods-for-good! Then, head over to Share Our Strength for help in running a bake sale at your workplace that will benefit No Kid Hungry! And, don’t forget to dine out to during Dine Out for No Kid Hungry!

Support this great cause by dining out September 18-24, 2011, at a participating restaurant.

Participating locations can be found by visiting DineOutForNoKidHungry.org, or look for participating Open Table member restaurants here.

More than 17 million children in America — almost one of four — struggle with hunger. With the support of thousands of restaurants, dozens of corporate partners and millions of consumers, Share Our Strength is changing that. “We are asking everyone—private citizens, businesses, policymakers and other nonprofits—to help us end childhood hunger in this country,” said Bill Shore, Founder of Share Our Strength.  “We continue to be amazed by the generosity and commitment of the restaurant industry and its customers. Last year, they raised more than $1.5 million through Dine Out For No Kid Hungry, a record high and twice what was raised the year before. Our goal is to involve as many restaurants and their customers as it takes to make No Kid Hungry a reality by 2015. I encourage everyone to dine out often at participating Dine Out For No Kid Hungry restaurants in September, then visit our web site, Strength.org, to learn what more they can do to make sure every child in America has access to the nutritious food they need.”
