OpenTable’s Website: Re-designed, Re-architected, Re-imagined

In 1998, we introduced diners to a brand new concept – booking restaurant reservations online. A lot has changed since then, though our website design has remained largely the same.

While the site has served us well over the years, it was time for an update. Today, the team at OpenTable is excited to launch a brand new web experience. Over the last several months, our team has been hard at work building new technology and designs that enhance the way diners discover and book restaurants on OpenTable.com.

The new site delivers a cohesive experience for diners who use OpenTable on the web, tablet, and mobile phones. It looks forward, with a scalable and flexible architecture to make it easier to introduce new features to enhance the overall dining experience. Our new search interface supports neighborhood, address, or specific restaurant names all in the same place, which means less clicking around. The design places new focus on the restaurant, bringing forward the content that inspires booking the perfect table. And after you make a reservation, we’ve made it easier to invite others and share.

Redesign

We hope that those who have used OpenTable for years and those who have just discovered us enjoy the new site. We will be hard at work from here on out to continue to make it the best place to visit for that perfect night out.

We are always eager to hear from you, and please let us know how we can make it even better.

Welcome Team Copilot!

TCPAt OpenTable, we’re focused on helping restaurants build operational excellence and provide amazing hospitality to their guests. And the talented Copilot team, who joined the OpenTable family last month, and the restaurant analytics technology they’ve developed will support this effort by helping us deliver actionable intelligence to our restaurant customers in new and exciting ways.

The Copilot technology and service, which is powered by POS data and leverages local market comparisons, is currently being piloted in San Francisco and Los Angeles and we’re excited to begin offering this free service to our restaurant customers in other markets in the near future.

We hope you’ll stay tuned and join us in extending a warm welcome to the Copilot team and co-founders, Eli Chait and Dave Amusin.

Emerging Design at OpenTable

OpenTable strives to make the experience of dining out easier. Over the years, this has meant translating our service from the original website to all the various mobile devices people now use. We started out keeping it simple, knowing that was mandatory for people using us on the go.

The simplicity remains, though we’ve taken the opportunity to make the experiences richer and more inspiring. We’ve updated many of our interfaces, focusing on the various mobile platforms and the unique design languages each presents. The iPhone app kicked off a design refresh with the launch of iPhone 5 — and since then we have more imagery with Foodspotting dish photos while refreshing many of the user interfaces within the app. Android has followed suit with similar updates in addition to integrating Google+ Sign In.

The design team at OpenTable is a new addition, and these talented folks are busy planning an exciting future for how our consumer and restaurant products emerge. We’re in the early stages of our design evolution – some of which you can see in the before and after shots  – and there’s more and more to come.
