The Diners’ Choice Awards for the Top 100 Restaurants with the Best Service in the U.S. are generated from more than 5 million reviews collected from verified OpenTable diners between February 1, 2012 and January 31, 2013. All restaurants with a minimum “overall” score and number of qualifying reviews were included for consideration.  Qualifying restaurants were then scored and sorted according to the highest average rating in the service category.

“So,” my wife said on the evening of February 13, “I guess we’re not doing anything for Valentine’s Day.”

I knew I was in deep trouble. Even though she had often said Valentine’s Day was bogus and just an excuse for restaurants to sell overpriced dinners, I realized I had forgotten The Golden Rule: always make reservations just in case. It was 9:00 at night and any hope of scoring a table at anyplace decent would have evaporated days ago.

She was in the kitchen, out of view, and I needed time to think. I reached for my phone, and pressed the Fake Call app on my Win8 phone, causing it to ring.

“Hang on” I said, “Lemme get this first”, and then I left the room saying hello into the dead phone and proceeded to have a fake conversation about a computer problem. I got to my computer and called up a website I had heard about weeks before,

I punched it Vancouver, choose Feb 14, and 7:00 and amazingly, found a table at CinCin, a fine Italian restaurant over town. Within seconds, it confirmed my reservation via email. Walking back into the kitchen, I said goodbye to my fake caller.

“Valentine’s Day?” I said to my wife. “Got it covered, babe, 7:00 at CinCin.”

“You’re the best,” she said, giving me a peck.

God bless Fake Call and OpenTable.

We live outside Providence, RI. The restaurant we dined at this evening-Walter’s Italian in Cranston was new for us. We saw a good review on Yelp and decided to try it. On the PLUS side the service was Outstanding. But you know when it is dead on a Saturday night there may be an issue. It was a bad omen- sure enough they padded the bill in every way possible and ended up being WAY over priced for the food value. Buyer beware-empty parking lot-turn around!!
